It’s a great indie title by any measure and far and away one of the most innovative and compelling RPGs you can play on mobile.

Welcome to the new and improved Tales of Illyria website! We hope you like the site and the game as we’ve invested a great deal of time into both.

From now on this is where we’ll be posting general musings about development, game updates and more. You can find actual news about the game itself over on the news page, so be sure to check back there for any update notes and game specific information.

This blog will be managed by the entire team. Every so often you may see a post or two from one of our game writers, team leaders, programmers and more. If we need to vent our frustrations, would like to share something or just plain want to blog then this is the place we’ll come to do it.

A Mini Tale Set in Illyria

“Follow closer, Rugnar!  Don’t be too slow!”

The young child panted as he chased his older brother up the forested hill.  It was the very hill that their father had taken them to the top of when they were even smaller, but his work in the fields kept him busier lately, so the boys decided to venture out on their own.  Little Rugnar set his foot on a tree stump and leaned into his knee to catch his breath.

“Slow down, Marick!  You know I can’t keep up as well as you.”

“Weakness is no excuse, brother.  If you don’t push yourself harder, how will you ever grow strong?”  The younger cursed the elder’s words, struggling to pull himself up into the tree above.  “All you need is willpower and the proper mind, and you can accomplish anything.”

Rugnar’s sweaty hands gripped the bark tightly, but his arms were neither large nor powerful enough to properly wrap around the towering pine.  “I can’t do it, Marick.  I can’t do it.”

“You can do it, brother.  Trust me.  Just reach up toward me.”

He buried his cheek into the wood, afraid to look up.  “I can’t see it.”

“Come now.  Just give me your hand.”

The younger did as commanded and let go with one arm.  He thrust it into the empty space between himself and Marick and immediately lost his footing.  The rest of his body peeled away from the bark, and he felt himself falling before he could even react.  He screamed.

Marick’s hand was like lightning, grabbing his sibling’s wrist and hoisting him to the upper branch and safety.  After dusting the lad off and letting him compose himself, Marick spoke once more.

“And there are times when your strength alone isn’t enough.  For those moments, you’ll always have mother, father, Annalise, Hanna, and I.  Your family will always be there for you.”

The child couldn’t help but smile at his older brother’s words.  The laughter was followed by a head pat, and Marick beckoned him further up.  From the top of the pine, the boys were able to look out over the massive Lake Tiberon.  Its placid and pristine waters acted as both quiet comfort and source of life for their village.  In the same manner, the very hill they were on stood like a watchful sentinel, looking out over the land and the tiny vale nestled in its bosom.  At its peak, Marick Darcidus rested in the crook of a branch, viewing the landscape.

“I know it doesn’t seem like it, Ruggy, but one day, I’m gonna rule over all of these lands.”  He looked to his sibling.  “You’ll be by my side, won’t you?  I’ll make you my chief advisor.  I can’t have a kingdom without my little brother with me, yeah?”

“No!  I’m gonna’ be king, and you can be my advisor!”  Rugnar stood up as straight and tall as he could without losing balance.  Marick laughed out loud, but that laughter quickly dissolved when his eyes turned toward the distance.

Both of the boys turned.  Off on the far edge of the land, nestled in a dip between two rolling hills, was their village.  Smoke poured up from its center.  And from the middle of that smoke- flames.

Burning City

“Nooo!!  No, no, no, no, no!”  Marick shouted like a madman while his brother did everything he could to keep up.  By the time they reached their village, everything was totally ablaze.  A man they knew, a fisherman named Zarren, came stumbling from an adjacent street, his body littered with arrows.

“Children….  Run, children.  It’s the fey….  It’s the fey!  Children, run!”

He fell dead at their feet.  Worried for their family, the boys ran past the corpse and deeper into town.

Before they’d ever left the hill, they’d seen the smoke and fire billowing from the square and the church.  Their house had only been a few buildings away from the area, so neither of them was truly surprised at what they found, but both were still horrified.  Their house, their home, the only one they’d ever known, was engulfed in a rage of heat.  From the inside, they heard crying.

They heard the crying of two very young girls.

No words were said.  Both boys sprang into action, trying their hardest to break away the rubble that blocked the door.  Stones were removed, timbers were split, and Marrick kicked open the door just in time…. for a wall of fire to meet him.  And both brothers were cast back into the street.  And just like that, they lost everything all at once.

Rugnar was in shock.  He stumbled around, not knowing what to do.  He heard things very faintly.  His ears were ringing.  Marick didn’t have the same problem.

The lad stood up straight, grabbing a piece of a board with a burning end.  He stood.  He turned.  He ran headlong at the first fey he could see.

“You bastards.  You bastards!  I swear to the gods, I’ll kill you all!”

The board hit the raider in the arm, and he turned, seeming more annoyed than hurt.  It was enough, though.  He had a mission to complete.  A single punch sent Marick spinning to the ground, landing on his stomach.  He looked up at his little brother just in time for a sword to plunge through his back and out his stomach.  He shook for a moment, staring at his brother, shocked that he was meeting his end.

At eleven years of age, Marick Darcidus’ adventure was over.


The slice of that sword was the loudest thing Rugnar had ever heard.  He was deaf now.  He was deaf, and he stumbled toward his brother and his brother’s killer.  About halfway there, he felt the ground shake.  He turned in time to see an armored horse trample over him, beating him to the ground and stepping on his right arm and left leg, breaking them at once.

He blacked out from the pain.

It was hours later when he drifted back to the world from some quiet and lonely place.  The first sense to return was smell, the smell of roasting flesh.  The second was taste, and he could taste the sweat of cooking human “meat” in the air.  The third was touch; he felt the crushing weight of corpses placed upon him, the corpses of his neighbors, friends, and loved ones.  The fourth was sight, the faintest flicker of sunlight appearing between a hand, a pair of feet, and the decapitated head that framed it.

Hearing did not return.

With one arm, the child dragged his way out from beneath the pyre of bodies.  When sunlight broke upon his tiny frame, he allowed himself to tumble down the mess of flesh to the dirt.  He leaned against a piece of wall, turning back to face three-hundred thirty-nine people who were burning to ash.  From the middle of that mound, near where he’d narrowly escaped, was the unmistakeable hand of his brother.

Rugnar didn’t cry.  He didn’t shed a single tear.  He was beyond it, beyond the world.  At six years of age, Rugnar Darcidus determined that his purpose for the rest of his life would be to enslave or butcher every last fey he could find.  He would ensure that they would suffer a fate equal to what they put him and his family through.

From that point forward, he-


“Hmmm, what?”  The man shook his head, freeing himself from a daydream.

“Your rallying ceremony, Excellency.  It’s going to commence soon.”

“Oh, yes.  Of course.”  He snapped his fingers.  “Have the men ready my armor.  I think now is the appropriate time.”

“Right away, Your Grace.”

Incredible trial and hardship can do two things to a man- strengthen him for the future, or crush him entirely.  It is often the method by which incredible heroes are made, and the same method by which history’s greatest villains are crafted.  It makes men powerful and resourceful, wise and charismatic, determined, persistent, and persevering.  It also makes them cunning, ruthless, savage, and unscrupulous.  Rugnar Darcidus was all of these and more.

Rose petals fell on his face and frame when he stepped out from his inner sanctum.  Throngs of people from one end of his burgeoning empire to the other were now gathered at the foot of a magnificent castle that towered over Lake Tiberus, much taller than the hills nearby.  But he was apart from them in this holy place, the place where he’d built his palace, a place that had always been his home.  And the stones in front of him from which he would address his servants stood on the very ground where Marick had fallen, the same ground from where he’d dragged himself three decades before.

“Ladies and gentlemen, nobles and servants, friends, brothers, sisters…. Rugnar Darcidus the Black.”

The great magus Ziarusk bowed as he stepped out of his master’s way.  A multitude of the emperor’s closest companions did the same, all smiling wide when he took the balcony floor.  He appeared before his people for the first time, draped in dark armor forged in volcanic fire and blessed by a thousand magi.  They cheered for a very long time as he watched over them, but a single wave of his arm brought them to silence.  He cleared his throat.

“Friends, brothers, sisters…. indeed.  As many of you know, for a very long time, I was without family.  I had no mother, no father, no sisters or brothers, yet I carved a place for us in this world and have grown it into a shining gem, a beacon for all mankind.  And now I stand here today, looking out over all of you and I wonder, what more is there?  Surely, I have missed something.

“I thought it was family I was missing, but I was wrong.  You.  All of you.  Everyone gathered here, around me, behind me,” he spread an arm back to his companions, “you are all my family.  The only family I have.  The only family I need.”

A great cheering erupted from among them once more, and he waited a moment before silencing them again.

“You know, a great man once told me, “There are times when your strength alone will not be enough.  That’s what family is for.”  I almost scoffed at him, but he was right.  There have been times when I needed others, and this is a time where I need all of you.  The fey are finally pushed back to the brink of the world.  The only thing that remains for them in all of Illyria is Feylanor, their last bastion.

“You all say that I am a great man, but I am only one man.  Truly, I can do nothing.  It is all of you who make me great.  Every last one of you.  And now I need your help in driving out the last of these beastly people and ensuring that the tragedies which befell us in the past are not repeated.  With your help, we may finally know peace!

“So, won’t you stand with me, brothers and sisters?  Won’t you stand with me and help me to rid the world of this plague that is Fey?  Be my eyes, be my ears, and be my hands!  With you by my side, with you as my family, we can finally see an end to the menace!  For our children!  For our future!  For Darcidia!”

“For Rugnar!” they all shouted in return.  They kept chanting his name throughout the palace, the castle, and the city, and they would shout it across the whole empire.  As for the man himself, Rugnar stepped back from the balcony and turned to his compatriots.

Lady Steele gave him a curt nod, hands resting on the pommel of her sword.  Caiachus gave him a thumbs-up, arms still folded across his chest.  Ziarusk made a soft smirk, quietly chanting ‘Rugnar, Rugnar, Rugnar’ while Adamant and Prasha shot words of approval.

The emperor looked at all of his friends, then thought about the imminent destruction of the fey race.

The biggest smile crept its way across his face.

The Kourmar Throne

The Kingdoms of Illyria


In an age long since passed, Tortha stood as the capital of the sweeping Darcidian Empire lead by Rugnar the Black. After his death hundreds of years ago, his empire slowly crumbled and his great capital city began to sink into the rivers surrounding and beneath it until it was lost to the pages of history. Though its citizens have long-forgotten much of their origins, the laws and moral codes of the nation still cling to notions of knighthood, chivalry, and feudalism.

When Hysperia began its conquest decades ago, Tortha was the first to make a stand. After being soundly crushed, other nations learned from Tortha’s lesson and took Hysperia’s side. As soon as Gareth took the imperial throne, his paranoia drove him to oust King Benton in exchange for his own puppet king and impose heavy taxes and other burdens on the country’s people. Now Tortha is one of Hysperia’s tribute states and its citizens are being shaken to a breaking point. It is under these trying circumstances that heroes are made, heroes like Elric Faranthal.


In the days of the Darcidian Empire, Hysperia was a rural land with few citizens and a sparse collection of towns and villages. As the memory of Rugnar began to fade from the land, Hysperia, being on the fringes of the old empire, was the first to obtain sovereignty. It was first a tribal collection of lesser lords, but its access to vast stretches of flat farmland and excellent climate made it ripe for growth.

It wasn’t long until the fledgling nation rose to power, with refugees from the other lands pouring into its borders and causing its cities to swell. After generations of nearly endless wealth and expansion, Rendall rose up from a tiny, unnamed village to usurp the corrupt nobility and establish his own kingship. Seeing his success as the fulfillment of prophecy, he turned his eyes to the rest of Illyria, quickly bringing all but the fringes of the land under his sway.

Eventually, his son Gareth, seeing himself as the true heir of prophecy, poisoned him and took over the mantle of Imperator Divinus. In his paranoia, he broke Tortha further, overthrowing its king and establishing one loyal to him. He also inflicted penalties and abused human rights to the extent that its people are beginning to mutter and talks of rebellion are bubbling just beneath the surface.


Before Rugnar the Black ever existed, Illyria was, ironically an ancient Fey kingdom that stretched from the eastern seas to the forests of Tortha. With the rise of humanity, the elder kingdom and its ways were forgotten and Feylanor came into being. Seated in a dense forest and nestled heavily against water, Feylanor depends on the river trade that gave it its famous weapons armory. This same water allocation also made it the ideal setting for the Temple of the Saker, Illyria’s burgeoning monotheistic religion.

A matriarchy, Feylanor has been ruled by a lineage of queens that goes back to its founding, the most current of whom is the Iron Lady, Queen Tonnil Atannis. An intelligent woman with an imposing demeanor, she saw it wise to ally herself with Hysperia after Tortha’s fall. She is the very one who suggested that Elric Faranthal’s family should be killed to secure Eriez for the empire. In exchange for her loyalty, the empire has given her a great deal of influence in its goings on and is helping eradicate the non-human residents of Illyria that she has hated since childhood.


When it became obvious that Tortha would lose against Hysperia in the last war, Nycenia quickly allied itself with its neighbor to deliver the powerful, final blow. Despite being technically lorded over by King Marle Morian, Nycenia’s true power sits with the very wealthy Thieves’ Guild, led by Joric Loch, and the very powerful and secretive Assassins’ Guild, led by a figure known only as The Watcher.

With a long stretch of coast that covers a third of its mass, Nycenia was the obvious choice for the empire’s growing navy and an enormous amount of money was put into building its shipyards. In exchange for his fealty, Marle has been given rising power over these factions by Gareth, making him both a loyal and dangerously unpredictable enemy.


In every age and through all of time into forgotten memory, Kourmar has been Kourmar. It was never in the ancient Fey kingdom, Rugnar the Black could never tame it, and even now, as Gareth beats upon its doorstep, the tiny, mountainous peninsula stands as a rock against the storm. To outsiders, it’s a painful thorn. To loyalists, it’s an impressive stance against an oppressive force. To its many non-human inhabitants, it’s the final sanctuary in a world that wants them dead.

A protector of many, but friend of few, the young king is aware of the many enemies that surround him and so cares about only loyalty and strength. Having seen the rest of the continent collapse around him has given him much to think about, and so he steals his heart and the hearts of his people against the hardships to come.


When it became obvious that Rugnar the Black would be more than another tribal lord, the Vaseneans erected the Iron Wall, a massive, magical wall that stretches from sea to sea and has only two gates: Westgate in Tortha, and Korvas’ Folly in Kourmar. Ever since, contact with the rest of Illyria has slowly petered out into the modern day, when nothing is known beyond ancient record.

With nothing more than assumptions, most people believe Vasena to have died off, consumed by the eldritch creatures and magics that called the land home. Others think that it may have been destroyed by its own scholars, men who were famous for wielding powers unseen on the rest of the continent. Still more think that something both terrible and wonderful lies just beyond that wall, waiting for the day when its wheels will turn and the enchanted doors that guard it slowly clank open once more.

Illyria- A Land of Conflict

Since the dawn of its existence, Illyria has been a land of conflict. Stretching into antiquity before common history, the people who call the continent home have been locked in endless struggle. A placid land with sweeping landscapes, verdant plains, and a lengthy coast, Illyria has long been seen as the ideal capital for many an empire. Throughout that history, a number of powerful men have seen fit to spill the blood of thousands to control it.

In near pre-history, the majority of the continent was controlled by the mysterious fey, a people who led surprisingly complex and rich lives as evidenced by the vast and massive ruins they left behind. When their kingdom finally fell to the fledgling humanity, society collapsed into a dark age that set technology back six-hundred years. Ironically, the very people who cast the fey out saw them as foreigners in their own land and felt deep regret when the land regressed into turmoil.

Mankind, the inheritors of the land after the destruction of the fey, is not native to Illyria. One wouldn’t think that, though, seeing how quickly humans adapted to the landscape, but they are truly the newest residents to the peninsula. Through their tenacity, improvisation, and sheer ability to outbreed their foes, mankind quickly washed over the land like a plague, leaving nothing but his own image remaining and reducing all non-humans to a status less than citizen.


After taking over the western side of the continent in what are now Kourmar and Tortha, the people united beneath the banner of a burgeoning tribal warrior named Rugnar Darcidus, the man who became Rugnar the Black. Through his brutality in battle and wisdom in politics, he handed the remainder of the continent to humanity in a manner of decades, his capital seated on the Great Lake Tiberon, which divides Tortha in twain. In the events following his death, his empire slowly crumbled into five nations divided primarily by land features: Tortha, Kourmar, Feylanor, Nycenia, and Hysperia.

The many land forms that make Illyria’s countries distinct are what make it a gem to behold. The continent is split in half by three rivers that originate on Lake Promarc: Lannis to the south, Torre to the north, and Hyspus to the east. The water from the lake itself washes down annually from the Kourrac Mountains that wrap around Kourmar. On its northeastern corner, Illyria narrows into the Cape of Hyspus and Isles of Lask. To the southeast, the continent tapers into Narcena’s Horn and the Denar Archipelago.


To the west and nearly forgotten, Vasena rests in the wide arms of the Al-Muat Desert, a sea of sand divided by the narrow river Al-Hyat. Close off from the rest of Illyria by the Black Mountains to the south and a chain to the north called The Devil’s Fist, the west is a mystery to all but the most-learned of scholars. It is assumed that the land ends just on the other side of the empty sprawl, but no one is truly sure.

It is on such a landscape, so diverse and divided, that many peoples and ways are forged. And it is around their great rivers and sweeping plains that so many groups clash. The people now affix their eyes upon each other with looks of bloodlust, greed, and minds of survival. Illyria itself now hums with the din of war, its landscape bearing witness to the conflict of its short-lived denizens.

Such as it always has.

Just as it always will.

The Throne of Kourmar

You are Elric, the Parricide Lord

In Episode 1 you take on the role of Elric, a disgraced noble from the kingdom of Tortha. His family has been slain, and he’s out for revenge against those responsible, namely the self-proclaimed King of Hysperia Gareth.

Origin Story

Illyria was originally made up of six separate kingdoms: Vasena, Tortha, Hysperia, Kourmar, Feylanor, and Nycenia.

King Rendall of Hysperia, believing himself the ruler mentioned in an ancient prophesy that would rule over the whole of Illyria, invaded Tortha, crushing it to his will. Seeing the ruthlessness of the Hypserian armies, Nycenia and Feylanor were quick to ally themselves with the stronger power. With these four kingdoms in his hand, Rendall named himself Emperor.

Vasena, seeing the threat Hypseria posed, used its magic to block its borders from all external encroachment. Kourmar alone battled the Hysperian Empire to a standstill, with help from the fey and other magical creatures.

Soldiers at War

Rendall allowed the kingdoms to reign as they had before: Benton as king of Tortha, Marle as king of Nycenia, and Tonnil as queen of Feylanor. There was an uneasy peace for a time, until Rendall was found dead.

Rendall was poisoned by his son, Gareth, who believed his father had failed to unite all of Illyria under the Hysperian Empire. Convinced he was the destined ruler, Gareth claimed the mantle of Emperor.

Furious at Tortha for defying the prophecy, Gareth spread rumors that Tortha assassins had slain his father. In response to the supposed threat, Gareth then deposed King Benton and replaced him with Donnald Greyvon, the leader of the Purifiers, a religious faction that aims to purge anything not human. Greyvon was then given the task of sending his Purifiers to weaken the Kourmarian army.

Burning City

Gareth also decided to weaken Tortha further by rezoning one of Tortha’s cities, Eriez, to Feylanor’s rule, in order to help strengthen Feylanor against the neighboring Kourmar. Elric, lord of Eriez, was deposed. Despite the removal of his lordship, the people still sought his leadership. Tonnil requested help from Gareth to rectify the situation. Seeing no other choice, Gareth sent assassins from Nycenia to kill Elric and his family. Elric escaped, and, fearing Elric’s pull with the people of his city and the possible response from Tortha, Gareth claimed Elric committed parricide and put a bounty on his head. Elric fled Eriez, heading north to the Torthan capital, hoping to reclaim his title and get vengeance on whoever killed his family.
